December 2007
Annual Christmas Concert
Our annual Christmas concert will be held on Sunday, December 2
at 4:00 pm at the Rockport Methodist Church. Selections will
include traditional favorites along with "Santa's Symphony"
arranged by Ricky Lombardo and "A Christmas Collection"
arranged by Martha Rearick.
A note about the arrangers.....
The club has played many of Ricky Lombardo's arrangements over
the years. We recently sent him a CD the club made with a
recording of one of his arrangements. He told us he enjoyed
listening to it and is happy we like his arrangements. Thank you,
Ricky!
Martha Rearick, born in Danville, Il, grew up as a Floridian. She
obtained degrees in both flute and piano at the University of
Michigan and taught at a community college in Pensacola and the
Univerisity of Southern Florida. She was both a flutist and piano
accompanist at many conventions and held master classes and
recitals across the country. Rearick died in May 2006 of cancer at
the age of 67. Flutist Christine Jennings performed at the Martha
Rearick Memorial Concert at Grusin Music Hall in Colorado in
March 2007.
Greetings from composer Bill Bunch
We recently received a letter from Bill Bunch, former faculty member
of Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, who graciously composed a piece
exclusively for the Coastal Bend Flute Club. We performed his work
entitled "Scherzo" at previous concerts.
Bill now lives in Woodbury, CT. and is working on selling his Corpus
Christi home. He reports that his health has been improving and tests
are coming back normal.
He enjoyed listening to the club's recording of "Scherzo" and sends
everyone his best wishes.
A New Gary Schocker Composition
Gary Schocker is known as the most published living composer for flute. As
a flutist, he has performed with orchestras all over the world. He also
teaches students who travel to his home base in New York. He has won the
NFA's annual Newly Published Music Award many times.
The Texas Flute Society is commissioning a new piece from Gary that will
be shared by various flute organizations in Texas, including the CBFC. He
anticipates that he will be able to complete this work by March of 2008, so
that it can be premiered at the Texas Flute Festival on May 17, 2008. The
Society is planning to ask different groups to send representatives to
participate in a combined flute choir for the debut of this work.
Merry Christmas!
