VOLUME 15
NUMBER 5
Flutings From Frances
Dear CBFC MEMBERS,

Well, the past three years as your president have been quite a ride.  During the process of
turning the reigns over to Linda Weber, your new president, I have been reflecting on all
the years I have been  associated with the club.

As I end my tenure as your president, I leave with feelings of joy and satisfaction,
gratefulness, and anticipation.  Joy - because we have come so far as an organization
since the idea of a club was born in a parking lot and subsequently a group of three met in
Suzie Mehlhorn's living room 16 years ago this summer to play flute trios and set down on
paper the purpose and by-laws of the Coastal Bend Flute Club.  With a current
membership of 23 flutists and a growing number of sponsors and supporters, I can see the
physical growth.  But the growth has taken place not only in the numbers.  This is where the
satisfaction comes in.

One of my personal  goals over the past three years was to advance our musical level in
terms of playing ability and music literature.  I am satisfied that we were able to meet that
goal.  On our recent Spring Concert, the quality of our sound and overall ensemble playing
exceeded my expectations; and I was additionally  proud that we were able to bring our
audience a concert of true quality music - all arranged for flute choir and much of it played
utilizing our alto and bass flutes.

Our accomplishments were the result of our group effort and that brings me the
gratefulness I feel about being among such a wonderful group of individuals.  While the
original impetus for forming CBFC was a gathering of flute players to make music together,
I never dreamed that over the years I would look forward to our meetings  as much to be in
the company of my friends as much as to play the music.

And that brings me to anticipation.  Even though I am stepping down from the spotlight, I
have no intention of leaving the company of my flute playing comrades.  It is just time for
me to participate in our club's activities from the other side of the director's stand.  Much of
the strength of our club comes from its flexibility and  diversity.  It has always been
important that we have a heterogeneous membership, and furthermore, every change in
leadership over the years has brought a new energy and dimension to our group.  You can
be assured you will have very capable leadership this coming year with Linda, your
president; Judy, your vice-president; Carolyn, your treasurer; and Paul, your newsletter
editor/historian.  We can all look forward with anticipation to the resumption of our meetings
in the fall.  I hope you will join me in eager expectation of whatever emphases our new
board will bring to our agenda.

I read recently that in order to maintain a balance in life and keep stress in check, one
should decrease the level of involvement in a given activity before taking on added
responsibilities in another.  So perhaps this is  the right time for me to release the reigns of
leadership in CBFC as I happily prepare to enjoy a greater profile in the realm of
grandparenthood in the coming months.

Have a wonderful summer and I'll see you in the fall.

Flutings From Linda
Greetings to all CBFC members, sponsors, and friends!

A hearty congratulations once again to our graduating seniors, Amanda, Roseanne,
Jessica and Ben.  We wish you much success in your future  It has been wonderful to have
you playing with CBFC during your high school
years.  Besides, it has been delightful getting to know you!!  You will be greatly missed.
Please keep us informed about your accomplishments.  We would love
to have news from you when you get settled into your first semester at college.  And,
remember to keep playing your flute!  You are welcome to come play with us whenever you
are able to do so.  Roseanne, I think you will still be in this area, so, keep on coming to
Flute Club!

Thank you to Frances Branning for a wonderful closing meeting in May.  I know everyone
appreciates the beautiful certificates, gifts, and awards. Frances,
you are so thoughtful.  All of us want to thank Frances for her leadership as president the
past three years.  When things function smoothly, as they
certainly have, we never know all the work that has been done behind the scenes.  So,
thank you, Frances, for EVERYTHING!

Mary Olivares, our trusty treasurer for the past three years, is also retiring from the CBFC
board.  She has been another silent worker who has kept us “in the
black”.  Mary, thank you for your leadership, and the huge responsibility you undertook as
keeper of the money.

As your incoming president, I want to welcome aboard Judy Cole as our vice president.
She has been a long-standing member of CBFC and will be a great asset to the board with
all her experience.  Carolyn Everett has gracefully accepted the treasurer’s position.
Carolyn has played with the group and served in many other ways for several years. Our
historian, Paul Klemm will continue on the CBFC board.  As one of our more recent
members, he has brought to the group many talents in addition to his flute and bassoon
playing.  Together, I know these people will serve well in guiding the organization during
the next year.
Remember that our jobs go beyond our titles.  We will meet together this month to begin
plans for fall schedules and activities.  Please contact any one of
us if you have particular needs or thoughts about the flute club.

I am very excited about being selected as your president for the coming year.  Frances is
giving me a very strong, loyal, talented and enthusiastic group of
people to lead.  I ask that you continue playing throughout the summer.  Look for
opportunities to share your talent.  And, look for potential members who may find CBFC a
great opportunity.  We want others to know about us and we want to give flutists in the area
an opportunity to play.  Please give us addresses of potential members so we can notify
them of our first meeting in September.

Happy fluting!

Linda Weber
