Flutings From Frances
VOLUME 15
NUMBER 5
Dear Members,

Once again it is time for me to express a big “thank you” to all of you who participated in
the concert CBFC did in Port Aransas on Feb. 20.  You did a BEAUTIFUL job and our
audience of mostly islanders and Winter Texans were very pleased with the variety of
music we played.  It is always fun for us to play to a packed house and we appreciate the
generous donation to our treasury too!   A return engagement to play at the Port Aransas
Community Theatre around the same time again next year is already being planned.  A
special word of thanks goes to Judy Cole for handling the arrangements for our
performance and another mention goes to Paul Klemm for printing our programs.

I hope that all of you will make the effort to be present at our
meeting next Sunday, March 20 at St. Luke's at 1:30.  I have nicknamed that gathering as
the 'give and take' rehearsal because we will be finalizing our selection of music we will be
playing on our spring concert (Apr. 24.).  About 3/4 of the music will be taken from the
program we did in Port Aransas, and we will be adding two new selections   -- Serendipity
(the boomwhackers piece!)  and Pedazitos (See review elsewhere in this newsletter)
which we have yet to work on.  I know you are going to enjoy them both.

Please take note of the dates on the CBFC calendar for the
remainder of our club year.   Everything is set now.   About 8 members will be needed to
play the wedding on May 21.  Be prepared to let me know if you would be interested in
playing for this occasion.  It will be an afternoon wedding in Orange Grove and we will be
playing music that we have played for weddings in the past.  I will have a sign up sheet at
the meeting.

Another item of business on our upcoming meeting's agenda will be to have a 'vest fitting'
session.    Our club has grown significantly in number since our vests were made a
number of years ago and we do not have a lot of 'extras' any more.   It will help expedite
matters for our performing membership to try on to determine the size(s) that are
workable for them ahead of time so that a list can be made.  We hope to avoid the mad
scramble to find a vest that fits on concert day in April.  Your officers are also working on
an alternative to the vests for the gentlemen in our group and you can find out more
about that at the meeting to.
See you then.................   Frances

News about the Newsletter
The 28th Annual
Flute Festival
About a month ago I accidentally sent an e-mail to all of the members on my e-mail
list.  In the e-mail I had a review that Frances wrote for the Albinoni Adagio from
Suite for Organ.  The e-mail asked the question; how do you like this format.  I
actually received about four or five responses (believe it or not, that’s almost a
record).  Not all of the responses I received were positive.  Some of you that e-
mailed me, as well as some of you that didn’t, said that you would prefer to receive
the newsletter in paper format.

Probably the biggest reason we are publishing an electronic version of the
newsletter, is cost.  We can put our newsletter on the website at a fraction of the
cost of publishing a paper newsletter.  That means instead of spending the club’s
money on printing and postage, we can save our money for better things, like new
music, and instruments (another bass flute is on our Christmas wish list).  That
being said, if anyone really needs a paper copy of the newsletter, let me know, and
I will get them one.

One of the best parts of having a website is that we are going to be able to get
information out much faster.  This past year several of our members have had
recitals, there have been auditions and we weren’t able to get that information out
until it was too late.  My goals is to keep everyone informed on our member’s (as
well as the flute community at large) performances, rehearsals and auditions.  I
have already contacted our members at the local universities asking them to keep
us abreast of their programs.  I would also like to hear from our members.  Let me
know when you have a performance coming up.  I’m looking for recitals, concerts
(orchestra, band…); really anything you’re involved with.

Lastly, please look at our sponsor’s page.  If you click on each sponsors
advertisement, a new page will open directing you to that sponsor’s web site.  The
financial help we get from our sponsors is invaluable.  Please use these links and
patronize our sponsors as much as possible.

To submit information for the newsletter or the website send it to my e-mail at

New Music Review - Pedazitos
One of our favorite flute music publishers (Alry) has teamed up with multi-talented
California composer-musician Nancy W. Wood to bring to us this original work
written for flute choir.  Pedazitos (little pieces) is made up of four short movements
which are presented in an order alternating between moderate and faster tempos.
It is the initial phrase of the third movement that provides continuity in content as
variations on this phrase can be heard in all of the movements.

Each movement differs in key as well as style which also helps sustain interest on
the part of the listeners and keeps the musicians on their toes as well.  The first
and third movements call for a C flute on the first part, while the first part is scored
for piccolo on the second and fourth movements.  All movements have three
additional C flute parts, and alto and bass parts that are non-optional.

The movements in order are "El Paseo" (a stroll,) "El Baile" (dance,) "Ensuelo"
(daydream,) and La Festividad which according to the composer "speaks for
itself!"

Pedazitos was published in 2004 and has received positive reviews in several
flute journals.

Flute Tips
Scale Practice Routine:
suggested by James Galway
at the 1997 NFA Flute Convention - Chicago
  • ABOVE: first 5 note pattern in C Major.

  • Play as smoothly as possible without accenting any notes.

  • Play with your best possible sound on each note.

  • Begin slowly and gradually speed up over time as your technique improves.

  • Continue up the range of the flute with each consecutive 5 note pattern.

  • Continue the same approach in ALL keys - plan on investing lots of time to each
    key.
