Lyrics from Linda
Greetings Fellow Fluters! Flutists? Flautists? I remember seeing the famous Irish flutist Sir
James Galway several years ago on the Tonight Show. He was asked if he preferred to be
called a Flautist or a Flutist. He said “Neither! I am just a flute player!” He thought the term
“flute player” was a more casual term, not putting him above the general public. Galway, like
many other current professional musicians has made a great effort to popularize classical
music and the performance of “classical” instruments and vocal literature such as opera.
Through his worldwide performances and his recordings he has accomplished his goal of
bringing the flute and flute literature to those who may not have shared this interest. Galway
performs a whole variety of music, both traditional classical music and contemporary music
composed specifically for flute and more popular genres such as folk music implementing
the flute. Remember that he even likes to play the penny whistle on which his technique is
phenomenal. Our own Coastal Bend Flutes has a similar goal. We want to include flute
players (choose your own particular “handle”) who play professionally, students who are
studying flute in high school, folks who played flute while in school some years ago and want
to continue playing, anyone who is willing to learn the music, attend our monthly rehearsals
and be loyal to the Coastal Bend Flutes. Another part of this goal is to provide a variety of
music, both for us to play and for our audiences to enjoy.
We have some exciting plans for this year. The new board for Coastal Bend Flutes has had
three fruitful meetings since the last rehearsal in May to conduct the business of the
organization. We will share some of those accomplishments with you at our first meeting this
Sunday, September 11 at First Presbyterian Church, 1701 Crosby St. in Portland. Please
view the Home Page of our website for specific driving directions from your home address.
Paul Klemm, our historian and newsletter editor has worked hard to develop the website and
keep it current. You will also see our calendar for the year, including other performances in
the community. The calendar will be updated throughout the year. We want to thank Ouida
Richardson, the Music Director at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, and long-time
member of Coastal Bend Flutes for graciously hosting our rehearsals and concerts for the
past three years. Of course we also are grateful to the parishioners and staff of St. Luke’s
for the use of their lovely chapel. We hope our new location will be more central, and enable
us to draw members from more surrounding areas. Our new hosts are quite excited to share
their facility with us. Please arrange a carpool, or meet somewhere to ride together. We
hope each of you will bring a fellow flutist who will enjoy a new playing opportunity.
Remember to bring a music stand, and an extra one if you have it to share.
As we begin a new performing year, practice is one of the most essential components of
being successful. Of course, regular attendance at rehearsals is essential as well. In my
journal reading, I discovered a concise formula of practice tips. This is from an article written
by Lisa M. Maynard in the current issue of Teaching Music, a publication of MENC, the
National Association for Music Education. Ms. Maynard is assistant professor at Baylor
University in Waco.
Steps for Successful Practice Sessions
Remember, when you hit a snag in your practice, the remedy is STIIRRR.
1. Stop, think, and identify the problem.
2. Isolate the problem by breaking it down to its simplest form.
3. Remediate by using a variety of strategies to fix the problem.
4. Reinforce playing the section correctly by repeating it many times successfully and
consecutively.
5. Recontextualize once you’ve got it by reincorporating the once-problem spot back
into the music. Begin with slightly larger chunks of the music, and gradually increase the
size of the chunks until you are confident the problem is fixed.
6. If the problem should occur later, go back to step 2, and repeat as necessary.
I look forward to seeing you again, or meeting you anew next Sunday. Even more, I am
eager to hear our flute ensemble playing together again as we launch another year of
performing together. The officers will share with you some of the plans we have made. Most
of our time will be spent playing new music. Hope your summer has been good for you and
for your music. See you on Sunday!

speed by speedy
practice. The only way to
get fast is to be deep,
wide awake, and slow.
When you habitually zip

one of those things you
have to give up - like
love - before it comes
flying to you through the

September Meeting
Our first meeting, as I'm sure you already know, is scheduled for 1:30 - 4:00 Sunday
September 11th. This year we will be holding our meeting/rehearsals at the first
Presbyterian Church in Portland. If you haven't already, you can get directions from the link
on the home page.
Please park on Crosby St. in the parking lot just before you reach the church. (In case of
bad weather, you may park on the street by the entrance, if necessary.) Follow the sidewalk
by the street and enter through the kitchen door, which faces Crosby.
As always, please try to arrive so that we can actually get started at 1:30. Please remember
to bring a music stand, and of course your flute.
If you know of someone that might be interested in joining us, please bring them along. New
members are welcome regardless of the time of year, but the first meeting is an ideal time
for them to join.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact one of the club's
officers.
